PETROF: European Craftsmanship Since 1864
The Petrof Piano factory was
founded in 1864 by Antonin Petrof in Hradec Kralove, one hundred kilometres
east of Prague in the Czech Republic. Three generations of the Petrof
family owned and managed the business, during which time the company kept
pace with technical developments and earned prizes for their pianos at
international exhibitions. In 1965, Petrof joined the Industrial and Commercial
Group, the state-controlled import-export company. In 1970, a new
main factory for the production of vertical pianos was built in Hradec
Kralove and this was later joined with a new grand piano factory in 1989.
Petrof engineers and technicians
are extremely proud of the fact that in the construction of both grand
and vertical pianos, only classic components and traditional production
methods are used. The majority of components are produced in Petrof's
own factories which eliminates the need for most subcontractors.
- The
soundboard is constructed exclusively of the finest solid spruce which
is aged for a minimum of five years in the open air and then placed
in drying rooms to reduce moisture content to industry standards.
- The
pin block is produced of laminated beech.
- The
full perimeter iron frame is carefully designed and dimensioned to provide
proper stabilization and unparalleled tone.
- Only
the finest quality polyester resin finish is used on Petrof pianos.
It is applied, allowed to harden, and polished by hand.
- The
real wood veneers of mahogany, walnut and oak are beautifully shaded
and hand matched. The design of the cabinetry is among the finest in
the world and fits equally well in homes and fine concert halls.
Today's
production methods are a unique blend of modern and old world traditional
piano building techniques. The result is a Petrof piano which offers
a pleasant mellow tone, unequalled action and a long lifetime of service.
